At $500K of business income, the biggest tax wins usually come from entity setup and owner pay, a large retirement plan, and real estate. At $500K of business income, the biggest tax wins usually come from three places: how the business is set up and how you pay yourself, a large retirement plan, and real estate. If you want answers when you need them, look at Main Street Business Owner HQ or Anderson Platinum. If you want a firm to run it, look at Tax Alchemy or a CPA who plans ahead. Why does a $500K business owner overpay taxes?

Most owners at this level are not missing one trick. They are missing a plan made before the year ends. Three gaps show up again and again:

  1. Entity and owner pay. If you are an S corporation owner, the IRS expects you to pay yourself a reasonable salary for your work (IRS guidance on S corporation pay). Too low invites trouble. Too high can mean extra payroll tax.
  2. Retirement plans. For 2026, the IRS limit on total additions to a 401(k) is $72,000, plus catch-up if you are 50 or older (IRS 401(k) limits). A SEP has the same $72,000 cap, or 25% of pay if less (IRS SEP limits).
  3. The QBI deduction. Some owners can deduct up to 20% of qualified business income (IRS QBI page). Income limits apply. For many service businesses at this income, the deduction shrinks or goes away, so ask your CPA where you fall.

Real estate can help too, but only in some cases. See the section on real estate below.

Which option should you choose?

Choose a CPA who does planning if you want one trusted person to look at your numbers each quarter and file the return. Ask how many planning meetings you get, not just when the return is due.

Choose Main Street Business Owner HQ if you like learning on your own schedule and want biweekly group masterminds with Mark Kohler.

Choose Anderson Platinum if you have several entities or properties and want to ask legal and tax questions as they come up.

Choose WealthAbility if you want a small group led by Tom Wheelwright and you are fine with an application.

Choose Tax Alchemy if you want a firm to build the plan, put it in place, and file, and the published fee range makes sense next to your tax bill.

Choose Profit First if your real problem is cash flow, not taxes. It does not do tax strategy, but it can stop money from leaking out of the business.

Choose Legacy Wealth Blueprint if you want to learn the moves, get a written plan for your numbers, and have weekly live calls before you act.

Can real estate lower taxes on business income?

Sometimes. Losses from a normal long-term rental are passive. They usually cannot offset business income at your level, because the $25,000 rental allowance is gone above $150,000 of modified AGI (IRS Publication 925).

Two exceptions come up a lot:

  • The short-term rental loophole. If guests stay 7 days or less on average and you materially participate, losses can offset other income. See our short-term rental loophole guide.
  • Real estate professional status. It needs 750+ hours a year in real estate and more than half your working time, which is hard if you run a busy business.

If you are weighing REPS against the STR loophole, see REPS vs the STR loophole.

Both get bigger with cost segregation. Always run the deal on its own numbers first.

What should you ask before you pay anyone?

  1. Who will look at my actual numbers, and how often?
  2. Do you file the return, or do I still need a CPA?
  3. What is the full price, payment terms, and refund window, in writing?
  4. What happens when the term ends?
  5. Can you show me how you checked a past plan against a filed return?

Where does Legacy Wealth Blueprint fit, and where does it not?

Legacy Wealth Blueprint is our program, so read this with that in mind.

Where it fits. In the 72 wealth plans we studied, business entities and retirement accounts were among the moves named most often. Members get a 100+ video course, 12 months in a private community, weekly live coaching calls, a written wealth plan, a 1-on-1 guide, and access to partner specialists for tax, estate, and entity work. The study is clear that plan figures are targets, not audited results.

Where it does not fit.

  • We do not file your return. You take the plan to your own CPA.
  • It is not a done-for-you firm. If you want someone else to run everything, a firm fits better.
  • It is not a legal service. For contracts or asset protection documents, you need an attorney.

For more, see our guides for high-income earners and W-2 employees if you also have a salary. You can read member stories on our reviews page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the first tax move for a business owner making $500K?

Check how the business is taxed and how you pay yourself. Many owners at this level look at S corporation status with a reasonable salary, and a retirement plan that lets them put away much more than a W-2 worker can.

How much can a business owner put in a Solo 401(k) in 2026?

The IRS limit on total additions for 2026 is $72,000, plus catch-up contributions if you are 50 or older. The employee deferral part is $24,500. Your real number depends on your pay and plan type.

Do these programs file my taxes?

Most do not. Tax Alchemy files for its advisory clients. Anderson sells tax packages separately from Platinum. Main Street Business Owner HQ, WealthAbility, Profit First, and Legacy Wealth Blueprint are education or coaching, so your CPA still files.

Is a CPA enough, or do I need a program?

A good CPA who plans ahead may be all you need. Many CPAs only file what already happened. A program helps if you want to learn the moves and bring better questions to your CPA.

Can real estate lower taxes on business income?

It can, but only in certain cases. Normal rental losses are passive and usually cannot offset business income at this level. The short-term rental loophole and real estate professional status are the two common exceptions.

How does Legacy Wealth Blueprint price its program?

The investment is set on a call around your situation, with payment options. We do not post a menu of prices, so ask for the full terms in writing before you decide.
