What this calculates

Estimates what comes out of each pay period from a flat rate plus any extra fixed amount you have asked payroll to withhold.

How to use it

  1. Start with gross per period and work down the form, or load an example to begin from a realistic case.
  2. Read the headline result alongside the supporting rows, which show the intermediate figures behind it.
  3. Check the assumptions. They decide what the number includes and, more importantly, what it leaves out.
  4. Sweep extra flat withholding on the response curve to see how much it actually moves the answer.
  5. Run a cautious case as well as an optimistic one before using the estimate in a decision.

Common mistakes

  • Setting withholding to zero for a side income that still owes tax.
  • Forgetting to revisit withholding after a raise, a bonus, or a change in household income.
  • Confusing the withholding rate with your actual tax rate. Withholding is a down payment, not the bill.

Formula

Withholding = gross × rate + extra flat amount

Inputs

  • Gross per period
  • Withholding rate (%)

FAQ

What if I have more than one job?

Withholding usually under-collects across jobs, because each employer withholds as though its salary were your only income. The tax withholding reconciliation calculator is the place to check the total.

How do I add extra withholding?

In the US, a fixed dollar amount per pay period goes on the extra withholding line of your W-4. That is exactly what the extra field here models.

Should I aim for a big refund?

A large refund is an interest-free loan to the government. Aiming close to zero keeps the money in your cheques, as long as you will not spend the difference and come up short.

How much should I have withheld from my paycheck?

Enough that total withholding for the year lands near your actual tax liability. A common starting point is your effective tax rate from last year's return, adjusted for any big changes.

Why did my withholding change mid-year?

Employers adjust withholding when you file a new W-4, get a raise or bonus, or when annual withholding tables change. Bonuses are often withheld at a flat 22% supplemental rate, which is another reason the figure moves.

What happens if I do not withhold enough?

You may owe the balance at filing, plus interest and possibly a penalty. The IRS safe harbor is usually met when withholding covers at least 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's.

Are these numbers financial advice?
