Tip. Even cross-town moves blow past do-it-yourself estimates. Pad the contingency.

Assumptions

  • Total = the sum of the categories × (1 + contingency%).
  • Deposits are counted as cash you need on the day, even though a security deposit usually comes back later.
  • Excludes any overlap where you are paying two rents or a mortgage and a rent in the same month.

What this calculates

Builds a move budget from movers, travel, deposits, setup, and a contingency percentage, because moves reliably cost more than the quote.

How to use it

  1. Start with movers / truck and work down the form, or load an example to begin from a realistic case.
  2. Read the headline result alongside the supporting rows, which show the intermediate figures behind it.
  3. Check the assumptions. They decide what the number includes and, more importantly, what it leaves out.
  4. Sweep contingency on the response curve to see how much it actually moves the answer.
  5. Run a cautious case as well as an optimistic one before using the estimate in a decision.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting utility deposits and the first week of groceries and supplies.
  • Not budgeting the overlap when the new lease starts before the old one ends.
  • Assuming an employer relocation package covers everything without reading what it excludes.

Formula

Total = (movers + travel + deposits + setup) × (1 + contingency%)

Inputs

  • Movers / truck
  • Travel & lodging
  • Deposits & fees
  • Setup / utilities / supplies
  • Contingency (%)

FAQ

Are deposits recoverable?

Security deposits usually come back later, and utility deposits often do too. Count them here anyway, because this is about cash you need on the day rather than cost over time.

Why do quotes come in low?

Binding estimates depend on an accurate inventory, and most people underestimate volume. Stairs, long carries, packing materials, and a heavier load than surveyed are the usual sources of overage.

How large should the contingency be?

Around 10% for a local move you control and 20% or more for a long-distance one. The further and the more third parties involved, the more room you need.

Are these numbers financial advice?
